The University of Pavia and the aims of the project

The long and prestigious history of the University of Pavia, which celebrated its 650 years of life in 2011, means that it has been able to collect over the centuries a wide archival, book and museum heritage, whose conservation and storage could cause several problems, especially when rare or valuable materials are at stake. The establishment of Digital Library Pavia, therefore, wants to represent the ideal solution to promote this material and make it available in digital format.

Digital Library Pavia main features

Digital Library Pavia runs in DSpace-GLAM, an open source solution developed by 4Science. It houses digital objects of different nature (ancient books, archival and documentary materials and museum objects) and allows them to be searched, viewed, downloaded and reused, compatibly with the assigned licenses and in accordance with the policies that regulate each institutions. DSpace-GLAM IIIF Image Viewer allows you to browse digital objects in a high resolution, zoom images and download them, if permitted by the related licenses.
The DSpace-GLAM (Optical Character Recognition) OCR & Transcription viewer facilitates the search for terms and the analysis of archived texts. Thanks to the audio-video streaming of DSpace-GLAM, Digital Library Pavia can also make available videos, films, audio and podcasts. Furthermore, you can study the historical and geographical context of the digital objects through relations such as persons, events and places. Layouts in Digital Library Pavia are compatible with all international standards (Dublin Core, EAD, MAG, METS, ICCD,…) and with the RDA guidelines. DSpace-GLAM can be as well integrated with long term preservation systems and, therefore, is compliant with the OAIS model. DSpace-GLAM also guarantees an excellent exposure of the objects on the web thanks to DSpace's SEO (Search Engine Optimization) features.
These features are the result of a constant collaboration of the development community with Google technicians. In addition, it provides the ability to use persistent identifiers (Handle, DOI) that find digital objects online regardless of the URL and the application on which they reside. The URIs are, in fact, a prerequisite for the exposure of Linked Open Data (LOD) and the sharing of digital resources. Digital library Pavia is a SAAS AGID compliant architecture.

Phase of the project

The phase of the project which is currently underway includes a census of all the digitized material which is already available in the Cultural Heritage Area branches, the organization of the recovery and adaptation of the aforementioned material in the platform and the configuration of the platform, as well, aiming at a user friendly navigation. While this first phase is in progress, we are planning side by side some activities for the digitization of other funds whose historical and /or scientific value is especially important for the academic community and for the local area.
